Thomas Mundy Peterson Day is observed annually on March 31 in New Jersey to honor his historic vote as the first African American to exercise his right to vote after the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed. The event took place on March 31, 1870, in Perth Amboy, one day after the amendment was ratified. At the time, only eligible men could vote, and Peterson's vote was an important step in the country's civil rights movement.

In Perth Amboy, a park was renamed Thomas Mundy Peterson Park in his honor, which opened in 2021. The park includes athletic fields and historical markers that tell the story of Peterson's life. Additionally, in 1989, the local school No. 1 was renamed Thomas Mundy Peterson School in recognition of his contributions to the city and the country.

The event is also marked with various cultural events and ceremonies.
